Portugal Eyes a Reunion of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mourinho for the 2026 World Cup
The Portuguese Football Federation is exploring the potential of utilizing the release clause in José Mourinho’s contract with Fenerbahce, aiming to bring him on board as the national team manager with a keen focus on the upcoming World Cup. With the goal of making a significant impact in what could be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup, the federation is seriously considering Mourinho, marking his first foray into managing a national team.
According to reports from BeIN Sports, later corroborated by CNN and GOAL, the recent success of Roberto Martínez, who has achieved impressive results since taking over, does not guarantee his continuation. There’s a noteworthy chance that the Portuguese Football Federation might secure Mourinho’s services, currently leading Fenerbahce.
Mourinho’s contract includes a release clause that they may activate if Fenerbahce falls short of expectations in the upcoming UEFA Nations League Final Four, where they are set to face Germany in the semifinals this June. Should he take on the role of head coach for his homeland, Mourinho would reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he previously managed at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, a period that witnessed the striker netting an astounding 168 goals in just 164 appearances.
Additionally, Mourinho has expressed his aspiration to lead the Portuguese national team, calling it a “dream” back in 2007, and stating in 2019 that it would be an experience he would love to have “before finishing my career.” Mourinho’s name has also surfaced concerning other national teams, notably Brazil, where he has recently become a hot topic following Dorival Júnior’s departure. Reports suggest that the Brazilian camp is showing interest in the Portuguese coach, while the preference seems to lean towards Carlo Ancelotti, particularly with his anticipated exit from Real Madrid after the current season.
